Help Wanted?

Every store has a help wanted sign, every paper is filled with want ads for employment.  I see phrases such as ‘signing bonus’, ‘retention bonus’, ‘all shifts’, ‘all positions’, ‘flexible hours’,  ‘no experience required and willing to train”.  Yet they just released unemployment stats in our county of 7.3%!!  Most of local merchants are frustrated that they can’t get people to fill their positions.  How can that be??  Something is not working here….and its more that just the people!! And this is happening in so many places right across the nation!

Forecasting Supply….if we could only get it right!  I was speaking with a new found friend last month at a conference on the East Coast and the subject of forecasting came up.  I always jokingly tell people my “golden rule'” in supply chain goes like this.  “Don’t ever buy too much and don’t ever run out!!…..and the difference is only ONE !!  But it is so true!  If only we could get there, the savings in waste would be off the charts.  Forecasting in the aftersales part of the automotive industry is one of the most difficult areas.  All I know is that, every forecast is going to be wrong!!  We either buy too much or not enough.  Lets say our overall accuracy in forecasting was 65%.  (choose whatever number works for you).  What if we improved on that forecasting accuracy by 5%?

We don’t need to get to 100% immediately, but lets get the party started!  The savings opportunity is exceptional!  So having said all that to my new found friend, he started to put his firm’s analytical expertise to the test!  Stay tuned, we will see what he finds on this mission.  In the meantime, “don’t buy too much and don’t run out!!!” Your customers are counting on you.

I’m excited to join my fellow warehousing, supply chain and logistics professionals at the 24th annual 2016 North America Parts Benchmark Conference this week. #NAPB offers its members the opportunity to design and execute benchmarking activities while understanding best-in-class performance and the processes used to achieve these best-in-class results. I am honored to have been invited to this forum by @CarlisleCompany to share my experience on “The Power of Leadership” during the course of the conference, communicating a simple message my colleagues may be able to use as a spring-board for their own personal growth and the betterment of their own leadership goals. Leadership Waste Continued- Part 3!

MEETINGS……Without knowing who the people are, I can usually tell who the highest ranking is! How you say? Simply by observing the one doing all or most of the talking!! This is once again, “leadership waste” of the highest form. An extraordinary leader or even a good leader, must be an excellent facilitator of his or her meetings. They must first insure healthy discussion, where people are not talking over each other.  Then they must draw out from all participants, their thoughts, their reasons and their recommendations. But most of all the leader must be an outstanding listener. If they do all the talking, the team will shut down and just answer questions when they have to. Not much will get accomplished.  In fact, if the drill was to just do what the leader wanted in the first place, there probably was no need for a meeting or a discussion.

When a leader facilitates and listens, the best decision will become clear and easy to see, as his team will have debated the issue, developed strategies and made recommendations. All the leader has to do is let his team tell him or her the best path going forward.

So to all you leaders out there, if you don’t want all your people looking at their shoes while you do all the talking… let them do all the talking and you do all or most of the listening!! Try it and you will see what it means to set the team free!!

Leaders who frequently come late to meetings create one of the ultimate forums of waste.  Having 10, 15, even 20 or more people sitting around waiting for the leaders to arrive is simply wrong.  It shows no respect for the leaders people, completely wastes people (companies) time.  It also displays arrogance on behalf of the leaders….he or she comes late because they can!  I understand emergencies,  but frequent episodes of lateness is very poor leadership and speaks volumes of the leader.

WASTE of the highest form!!  Do you often go to meetings and there are 2, 3,4, or even 5 people talking at the same time!  Talking over each other and no one listening!!  How could you even listen if you wanted to?  I can only listen to one person at a time.  It happens far too often in far to many companies and in far too many meeting rooms!  Nothing gets accomplished, and you are destined to return to the same topics next meeting!!  Which  brings me back to one of my favorite sayings….”Shut up and Listen”!!  Please weigh in here….does this happen to you?

Unfortunately this daily task list applies to far too many leaders.  It happened to me for years.  What’s important for a leader, is what he or she does between those four daily events. Important for our teams at work and our families at home. That’s where powerful leaders (as well as Mothers, Fathers, Husbands and Wives) make their impact and you need to be present and conscience to be effective.  Far too often our day is blurr.  If we let it be a blur, our teams will notice, and our families will notice.  Not in a good way.  Our teams and our families need us to be present all day long, paying close attention to them, their hopes, their dreams and their ideas.  Most important we need to be outstanding listeners. The dividends are endless.

So in other words… shut up and listen!

Discussing Choice and Consequences

Some compelling discussion ensued from my Jan. 25 post on Choice and Consequences which read, “You have the freedom of choice, but you don’t have the freedom of the consequences of your choices. We should talk.”

Well Dr. Gregory Molnar, Clinical Neuroscientist & Industrial Fellow at the University of Minnesota did want to talk! He wrote, “This quote reminds me of a good old fashion concept called accountability. In leadership it is a privilege and responsibility to lead. The privilege to make the decisions and the responsibility of owning the outcomes…”

While I was referring to the individual and their personal consequences, Greg takes it to the next level and he is absolutely spot on.  Leaders too have the freedom of choice, but not the freedom of the consequences impacting their team from the choices he or she has made.
